Blogger is great, but it has its limitations. I used Blogger for many years until finally outgrowing it and making the switch to WordPress. I wanted to have full ownership over my content so I chose to move to a self-hosted WordPress site. It was definitely one of those ‘why didn’t I do this sooner?’ moments. Blogger is perfect when you’re first starting out. It’s free and pretty simple to use. But somewhere along the way you might start feeling limited by what Blogger has to offer. This is a great time to make the move to WordPress.
When I’m referring to WordPress, I mean a self-hosted site using WordPress.org. WordPress.com uses the same powerful WordPress engine, but in a similar way to Blogger you are just renting space from WordPress.com. If you want to be fully in control of your content, you need you pay for your own web host (a server where your site sits). The price varies from quite cheap (a few dollars a month) to expensive depending on the service you need. I use and recommend BlueHost (affiliate link) who I believe provide a reliable service at a reasonable price.
WordPress is a powerful tool and it’s not just for blogs either. The ‘plugins’ that you can use on WordPress are much more powerful than Blogger’s widgets. They offer everything you can find in a Blogger widget and a whole lot more. They can be used for site security, site optimisation, report, email, SEO, eCommerce, the list goes on.
I read somewhere once that if you aren’t paying for a service, then you are the service. This was the main reason I switched from Blogger to WordPress. I no longer wanted to feel ‘owned’ by Google and at their mercy if they decided to stop supporting Blogger. I could lose my site! I wanted to be able to contact someone if my site went down. I wanted to be fully in control of my content and to own it 100%.
